This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1980. The following text is the original citation considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration. This building was the second house built on the station and began life as a single storey structure designed by Charles Tilleard Natusch in 1890. It was built for A.S.G. Carlyon who inherited the station from his father Major George Gwavas Carlyon. In 1900 Natusch added a second storey and tower. It is a large house, and has remained virtually unchanged since that time apart from the removal of the tower. The addition of the top storey was skilfully done, and is a tribute to the ability of the architect, C.T. Natusch (1859-1952) who specialised in domestic work in timber in the central and lower half of the North Island, and as one of the most prominent architects of his day in this field. The interior is remarkable for the timber panelled entrance hall and ornate staircase. The panelling uses native timbers and is without doubt one of the best examples of internal timbering in New Zealand. The house is enhanced by its superb setting amidst an extensive garden of mature trees and shrubs. Historically, the house is of very great significance in its association with one of the oldest and best known stations in Hawkes Bay, and is an excellent example of the architect's large scale country houses.
