This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1980. The following text is from the original Proposal for Classification report considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration. Built c.1870. This colonial cottage is associated with Jacob Waeckerle, an early European settler, who during his lifetime operated many social industries around Akaroa. The cottage makes an important contribution to the streetscape of Rue Lavaud in Akaroa.
