This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1980. The following text is from the original Proposal for Classification report considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration. Built 1885. Social/Historical Significance: The church was built at the initiation of some of the islands best known 19th century families, especially the Chadleigh and Raynor families, who were major station owners. Chadleigh was the islands first JP, and he raised money for the church in England. The interior has fine kauri panelling and lining. Townscape Significance: Forms a focal point for Te One.
