The Matakitaki a Kupe Historic Area consists of the coastal strip of the Matakitaki land block between the Mangatoetoe and Waitetuna Streams, as shown in Map One, comprising parts of sections Pt1A, 1, Pt 3, Pt1B, Pt1B1, Pt1B2, 1C1, Pt1C2, Pt4, Pt2, DP 27206 Matakitaki Block, the Lighthouse, Recreation, Road, Legal Purpose and Native (fishing) Reserves, and all of the Mangatoetoe subdivision. It includes the following traditional sites:

Matakitaki-a-kupe (the view that was Kupe's);

Nga-Ra-o-Kupe (Kupe's Sails);

Kupe's Fishing Canoe (a rock formation);

Te Ure-o-Kupe (a rock formation representing the penis of Kupe);

Te Mimi-o-Kupe (Mimimimi) (a permanent stream of water made by Kupe);

Kupe's Basin (a hollowed out rock -now dissappeared);

Kupe's Passage (A cavern-like approprach to the shore);

Kupe's Fish-Pool (a pool on a fishing platform);

The Sacred Pool (a very tapu bathing pool used by Kupe and his wife Kura-maro-tini);

Kupe's Mirror (a place to look for fishing coanoes at sea);

Sacrificial Rock (a place where haehae te kiri was performed).
