This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1980. This report includes the text from the original Proposal for Classification report considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration. Built in the early 1880s with additions c1902 and 1912, Waipare is now a sizeable homestead and with its seaside aspect has some aesthetic appeal. The transformation from Victorian cottage to Edwardian homestead is readily apparent. Waipare is a physical representation of the increasing wealth and prosperity of the owners. It had a long association with the Williams family (from the time of its construction until 1959, about 75 years) who were and still are well known in the Gisborne region. Neither J N nor Frank Williams appears to be particularly well-known as a result of individual achievements.
