This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1993. The following text is from the original Proposal for Classification report considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration. This brick and stone bridge was built in 1878 as part of the Akaroa Borough Councils programme to upgrade the town's roads. The bridge compares favourably with two bridges on Rue Lavaud in Akaroa built in 1879, which have decorative iron balustrades. This bridge differs in that it has a brick parapet and simple brick arch construction in combination with local stone.
