Anyone can apply to have a place or area considered for entry on the List. If you wish to nominate a historic place or area, please read this information sheet first. To remove a List entry or to request a change to the category or extent, a review will be required so please contact the Registrar.
These guidelines will help you to answer each question on the application form. Following the guidelines will strengthen your application.
Applications must be made on the official form. You may download a version of the application form (pdf) that you can print out and complete by hand, or if you prefer, you may complete the form electronically (writeable pdf) and email it back to us. To do this, download the form, save it to your computer, and after you have completed it, email it to the Registrar. If you are filling in your form electronically, remember to mark the map included at the back of the form, or attach a map (pdf version) or Word document separately.

To nominate wāhi tūpuna, wāhi tapu and wāhi tapu areas for entry on the List, contact the Registrar for an application form.
Heritage New Zealand is able to progress only a limited number of applications each year. A preliminary assessment and prioritisation of all applications received is undertaken at least annually, to determine which will be progressed as proposals for entry on the List. This assessment and prioritisation process takes into account the significance of the place, the needs for research, assessment and consultation, the desirability of generating agreement and support and other factors such as potential impact or efficiency.
If a nomination for entry on the List is selected for progression, a report is prepared to explain why the place or area is considered to be worthy. The owners and any other people with an interest in the place are consulted during the preparation of the report.
Proposals may either be publicly notified or agreed in writing with the owners and any registered interests (thereby eliminating the requirement for public notification). Public notification of the proposal provides the public with an opportunity to make a submission, and the report is generally made available to the public on our website as part of this process.
For historic places and historic areas, the final decision regarding entry on the List is made by the Board. The Māori Heritage Council makes the final decision regarding wāhi tūpuna, wāhi tapu and wāhi tapu areas. The Board and Māori Heritage Council consider proposals and any submissions received before making a decision.
Please note that registration of historic places, historic areas, wāhi tūpuna, wāhi tapu or wāhi tapu areas by Heritage New Zealand identifies only the heritage values of the property concerned, and should not be construed as advice on the state of the property, or as a comment of its soundness or safety, including in regard to earthquake risk, safety in the event of fire, or insanitary conditions.
