Wellington's Antrim House needs your help

Antrim House is an iconic Wellington heritage site, at the heart of everything Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga does, and a Category 1 historic place.

Once a home, hotel and hostel, and since 1981, a home again, this time as National Office for Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.  Our organisation cares for this grand old residence. It is an oasis of green in the city and is a rarity amongst the high rises of inner-city Wellington.

The historic significance of Antrim House arises from its origins as the home of successful businessman Robert Hannah (founder of the Hannah's shoes company), his wife Hannah and their family. It was designed in Italianate style by the firm of Thomas Turnbull & Son, with kauri paneling and staircase, stained glass windows and ornate ceilings by W├╝nderlich of Sydney. In the grounds are a stable block and conservatory.

Why does Antrim House need support?

The roof is no longer fit for purpose and requires completely replacing. The 80-year-old exterior paintwork needs to be stripped back to the original timber and repainted – a huge job given the size of the building.  And finally, some strengthening, and upgrades are planned to ensure this heritage gem endures another 100 years of everything Wellington throws at it (including quite a lot of weather).

Your support will help ensure this important part of Wellington’s past – and the amazing stories it contains - are preserved for future generations.
