Winning images reveal Christchurch’s social history

Heritage New Zealand’s Acting Director Southern, Christine Whybrew, helps pick the winning shots in Christchurch City Library’s photo hunt.

Christchurch City Libraries holds an annual city-wide photo hunt as part of the Heritage Festival. Cantabrians are asked to pull out old photo albums and submit them to the library to be digitised and added to discovery wall or canterburystories.nz

More than 3000 images have been added to the digital collection over the years. Often these images fill collection gaps and have a personal domestic focus.

2021 marked the 13th Photo Hunt, with over 600 entries received. Dr Christine Whybrew was thrilled to be the guest judge. “It was difficult to select from such a huge number and variety of entries but there were some standout images”, says Christine. “Many took me back to my pre-earthquake memories of Christchurch or reminded me of places and sites I have researched in my time at HNZPT”.

Jacqui Stewart from Christchurch City Libraries was grateful for Christine’s unique expertise and perspective. “Christine really took notice of images that had those incidental background details of social history which gave them another level of meaning. We really appreciated her assistance”.

The winning entries will be announced on the 6th December on christchurchcitylibraries.com
