Hayes Engineering Operating Days
05/01/2020 - 05/04/2020
Come and see Hayes Engineering Works in full operational mode at the special demonstration days over summer.
Hayes Engineering & Homestead is most famous for the inventions of Ernest Hayes, who founded the property in 1895, it stands as a hub of early Kiwi ingenuity – and its Summer Operating Days bring that history to life, with the machinery at the Works fully operational. See and hear the amazing belt-driven engineering works in action, and marvel at the ingenuity and tenacity of Ernest and Hannah Hayes living and working in this isolated location.
Property staff say the operating days are always extremely popular with visitors and it gives the public the opportunity to see the machinery safely demonstrated, giving a real insight into how the factory worked as a successful commercial enterprise in remote Oturehua.
Tours of the Engineering Works will be led by local Hayes’ guardian, Ken Gillespie who grew up near the Works and has had a life-long association with the place. You can then explore the other parts of the property and the Homestead at your own leisure.
Visitors can also 're-wire' with a delicious Hayes Roast coffee from the Hayes café. There's plenty of parking for cars and cyclists.
Beginning life as a small workshop for Ernest Hayes in 1895, Hayes Engineering grew into a business with a worldwide reputation by the 1930s, providing farmers with everything from wire strainers to windmills.
