On now: a free exhibition examining the striking world of wallpaper in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Perhaps more than any other aspect of interior design, wallpaper has the ability to conjure a specific time and place. It can invoke everything from a stately hall to an isolated bach; an exotic garden to a forgotten rumpus room. A particularly well-designed wallpaper can even capture the zeitgeist of an entire era – such as the fantastically floral 1970s example below!

Wallpaper sample | 1967-1975 (Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga)

Here at Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga we’re lucky to have one of the largest collections of historic wallpapers in the country, with over 2,000 samples spanning the many artistic and technological spirits of the age.

Join us on a journey through this collection with Off the Wall: Selections from the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Wallpaper Collection 1907-1975 – a free exhibition at Queens Arcade in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Follow us on Facebook for updates on the exhibition opening and special events. This unique exhibition highlights some of our favourite wallpapers, exploring the world in which they emerged – and how they continue to shape today’s design aesthetics.

Off the Wall is produced in partnership with Macfarlane Design, a family-run interior architecture and design studio based in Auckland.
