Landmark publication celebrates Matangireia
February 01, 2023 | Stories

A beautiful fully illustrated book telling the story of the restoration of Matangireia – the Māori Affairs Committee Room at Parliament – is now on sale through the online shop.

Matangireia opened in 1922, and was the result of years of dedication by important Māori political figures working in close collaboration with leading Māori arts practitioners and experts in Mātauranga Māori to bring a space to life that was created by Māori, for Māori and with Māori.

Celebrating 100 Years of Matangireia is a landmark publication, and one that the online shop is very proud to have available.

The book tells the story of this special place and its significant people, as highlighted in the book’s foreword written by Sir John Clarke KNZM CNZM:

“This is a story that celebrates place, people, and practice. When we share our knowledge of Māori places like this, created by Māori individuals with expertise they give so generously to their communities, we are recognising the importance of the taonga, and the value of handing down that knowledge,” he writes.

Celebrating 100 Years of Matangireia is written and published by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and is soft cover, 16 chapters, fully illustrated with black and white, and colour photographs. The book is edited by Ellen Andersen, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Director Kaiwhakahaere Tautiaki Taonga and Kaupapa Māori.
