Māori Heritage Council Te Kaunihera Māori o te Pouhere Taonga

The Māori Heritage Council assists Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga in developing and reflecting a bicultural view in the exercise of its powers and functions. It advocates for the interests of Pouhere Taonga and Council in so far as they relate to Māori heritage at any public or Māori forum.

The functions of the Māori Heritage Council include:

  • ensuring that the protection of heritage places and areas by Pouhere Taonga meet the needs of Māori
  • assisting Pouhere Taonga to develop and reflect a bicultural view in the exercise of its powers and functions
  • providing assistance to whānau, hapū and iwi in the preservation and management of their heritage resources
  • consideration of recommendations in relation to archaeological sites
  • making decisions about the registration/entries on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero of wāhi tapu, wāhi tapu areas, and wāhi tūpuna.
  • advocacy of the interests of Pouhere Taonga and Council so far as they relate to Māori heritage at any public or Māori forum.
