This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1980. The following text is from the original Proposal for Classification report considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration. Built c.1880 This is a rare example of a primitive colonial house type, the slab cottage. It was built at the end of Kaituna Valley to provide temporary accommodation for a cox-foot cutter, but has been moved to Okains Bay museum.
