“Te Ramaroa a Kupe titiro ki Tuwataroa i roto i Whirinaki, Hokianga te tai tama tane, e titiro ana ki Tangitu ki Whangaroa te tai tama wahine”. “Te Ramaroa a Kupe gazed upon Tuwataroa and Whirinaki, Hokianga on the West Coast gazing upon Tangitū to Whangaroa on the East Coast.” Tangitu maunga is a peak within the mountain ranges separating the east and west coasts of Te Tai Tokerau. Traditional narratives of place recall that the maunga was named after the lamentations of a kuia during inter-tribal warfare. In the generations following, Tangitu would then emit certain sounds depending on wind direction signifying when rangatira of either harbour had died. Near to the peak of Tangitu is the place known as Takapūwāhia, which is both a peak in the ranges and a meeting place. The tūpuna when crossing from east to west between Whangaroa and Hokianga would rest at Takapūwāhia, known to be a neutral space and where rangatira would discuss pertinent kaupapa. From Tangitu there are four significant awa linking the four major harbours of Te Tai Tokerau. The Whakatereterekia flows past Tangitu and makes its way west to the Hokianga. Rotomanoao is said to flow underground and comes out near Kerikeri and into Pewhairangi (Bay of Islands). Mangawhero starts at Tangitu and flows north into the Mangonui and then into Tokerau Moana (Doubtless Bay). The fourth awa, Te Awaroa, flows into the Te Pupuke and exits at Whangaroa. Both Tangitu and Takapūwāhia were named after tūpuna and are significant places for local hapū. The rivers that flow from Tangitu connect the east and west coasts, and therefore the people and hapū of those areas. This Listing is an important step in acknowledging the significance of Tangitu and Takapūwāhia and the ongoing relevance to the hapū of Whangaroa.
